Pilates Definition and History

Pilates-related indicators are rapidly increasing, such as the sales of Pilates and yoga apparel brand A, and the average annual growth rate of private Pilates license holders reaching 100%. The reason for this is that the popularity of new sports such as Pilates, weight training, and CrossFit has increased due to the 52-hour work week, dumbbell economy, and various media exposure of exercise-related contents by celebrities and influencers. Today, we will share the definition and history of Pilates.

Definition of Pilates

Pilates is an exercise that develops body flexibility and muscles for the purpose of rehabilitation and posture correction. It is named after the founder of Pilates, Joseph Pilates.

Joseph Pilates is a German-born male who has devoted his whole life to developing physical strength, including bodybuilding, gymnastics and martial arts due to a weak physical environment in his childhood. Poor posture, inefficient breathing, etc. are considered to be the main causes of poor health in modern lifestyles, so we designed a device with equipment and specifications to solve them.

development of pilates

In 1914, during World War I, Joseph Pilates, who was imprisoned in a British prisoner of war camp, developed an exercise method that could be performed in the confined space of the camp and informed the prisoners.

After the war, he met 'Rudolph van Laban', a master of dance, and began to interact with the dance world. In his first book, 'Your Health', he explained Pilates exercise therapy and emphasized posture correction using special beds and chairs.

In 1925, he emigrated to the United States and established a studio in New York with his wife, focusing on training in body balance and posture correction for spinal support for about 40 years. In particular, they had high expertise in exercises for breathing and core muscle development.

It is difficult to determine the exact timing of introduction in Korea, but it is rapidly spreading through the exposure of some female celebrities and influencers on TV, Instagram, and YouTube.

Effects of Pilates

Pilates improves core strength, posture, coordination and body flexibility. In particular, in performing each exercise, high accuracy and coordination with breathing are required.

Pilates claims that good posture begins with particularly strong abs, back and lower back muscles. The higher the symmetry of the left and right muscles, the more aligned the spine, relieving pain such as back pain.

In addition, sitting or standing postures are expected to reduce physical stress, strengthen resilience, and give confidence.
